Most people find out they need a crown and just… go along with it. The word carries enough authority that it rarely gets questioned. But a crown is one of the more significant things that can happen to a tooth – it’s irreversible, it’s expensive, and if it’s not matched to how your mouth actually works, it won’t last. We think you should know what you’re agreeing to, and why.

Every time you chew, swallow, or clench, your teeth absorb force. For back teeth in patients with a strong jaw or a grinding habit, that force can reach several hundred kilograms. That’s not a figure most people hear at a dental appointment — but it’s the most important factor in deciding what material goes in your mouth and whether it will still be there in ten years.

A crown chosen without accounting for your bite mechanics isn’t necessarily a bad crown. It’s just not the right one for you.

Before we discuss materials or book a preparation appointment, we look at whether a full crown is actually what the tooth needs. A heavily broken-down tooth with an already compromised root is a different situation to a cracked cusp on an otherwise healthy tooth — and those two situations shouldn’t get the same answer.
Where a full crown isn’t necessary, there are options that remove less tooth structure and bond directly to what’s already there. We’ll tell you when that’s worth considering and when it isn’t.

Sometimes it genuinely is. A tooth that’s been root-treated, heavily restored, or is carrying a crack that’s progressing. These are situations where a crown provides protection that nothing else matches. In those cases the goal shifts to material selection, margin placement, and making sure the final result works with your bite rather than against it.

For the process itself, you have two options. If your schedule allows a couple of hours in one go, same-day crowns are completed in a single appointment of around two to three hours — the whole thing, start to finish. The traditional route splits across two visits: a 90-minute preparation appointment followed by a 60-minute fit appointment roughly a fortnight later. Clinically the end result is the same, the choice usually comes down to what works for your diary.

On longevity, a crown placed for the right reason, on a tooth that’s been properly assessed, should last a long time. The ones that don’t tend to fail for reasons that were knowable beforehand — excessive bite force, insufficient remaining tooth structure, a grinding habit that wasn’t managed. That’s exactly the kind of thing we look at before treatment starts, not after.
