Dentistry for Children
Paediatric Dental Care

At Beyond Dental Care, we love working with kids, focussing on giving them a great and pain-free experience that will set them up for a life of great oral health. We focus on fun and education. Our little patients are always fascinated when we explain how our advanced technology works, and we use a variety of tools and techniques to put them at ease and to ease any concerns they may have had about coming to the dentist.

Starting your child’s dental care early in life is essential to establish great oral care practices which will set them up for life. Regular check ups and education from our dentists can help keep smiles bright and teeth healthy, helping to avoid dental decay which can lead to pain, fear and increased cost of care. Think of your kids dental checks like taking your car to the mechanic. Regular maintenance keeps things running smoothly and avoids unexpected, inconvenient and painful emergency treatment.

First Dental Visit. The specialised, paediatric, friendly, and holistic service provided for a child’s first dental visit.

We always aim to make your child’s first dental visit super fun! Depending on their age, this may just be sitting in the chair, or on your lap on the chair, and having them open their mouth for the dentist. We work with their comfort level. If they’d like the dentist to have a look in their mouth with a mirror, we can work with that! If they just want to meet the dentist, we can work with that too! And they always leave with a fun little gift to send them on their way to great oral health.

  • Regular Dental Check Up and Clean: Your child should visit the dentist every six months for a clean and check up. This ensures their teeth stay healthy, and that we can help them with oral hygiene habits. In the event that an issue is detected, we can solve the problem nice and early before things get painful. Early experience with dental pain can lead to a life-long fear of dentists. And, depending on your situation, your child’s check ups may be free!
  • Dental Sealants: Sometimes your child’s dentist will recommend fissure sealing one or more of your child’s teeth. Deep grooves, especially in molars, can be difficult to clean which can lead to trapped food and decay. Fissure sealant material is tooth coloured and is applied over the top of cleaned grooves to form a protective barrier over the grooves which prevents food getting trapped on chewing surfaces.
  • Tooth Coloured Fillings: In the event that your child does need a filling, the dentist will use a composite resin that matches the shade of your child’s teeth. The resin is shaped to match your child’s existing tooth, then hardened using a curing light. The dentist will polish the tooth and check that it feels comfortable to your child. When completed, a filling will closely resemble your child’s natural tooth!
  • Sedation Options: Kids can be very nervous of the unknown, and a trip to the dentist can sometimes cause anxiety, especially if they’ve had a previously painful experience. At Beyond Dental Care, we offer Nitrous Oxide (happy gas) to help our patients have a calm and pain-free experience. Combined with oxygen, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a special scented nasal hood (and your child can choose the scent!) whilst the dentist undertakes their work in your child’s mouth. Nitrous oxide can make a huge difference to anxious patients of all ages.
  • General Anesthesia: In some cases, dental work required may need to be undertaken under general anaesthetic. If this is the case for your child, we will refer them to a trusted paediatric specialist dentist to arrange treatment in hospital.
  • Management of Developing Dentition & Occlusion: Part of your child’s oral health journey at Beyond Dental Care includes the dentist monitoring your child’s current and developing teeth, as well as jaw alignment. This may include issues with unerupted teeth, overcrowding, abnormalities in tooth number, size, shape and position, some of which can lead to problems with eating, breathing. overall body health and self-confidence. Your child’s dentist will discuss any issues with you as well as recommended courses of treatment.
  • Orthodontics: Depending on your child’s requirements, we may be able to assist with orthodontic adjustment using Invisalign. This is becoming an increasingly common treatment as the aligners are virtually invisible, and convenient, as they may be removed to eat and drink. In some cases, traditional wired orthodontics may be required. If this is the case for your child, we will refer you to a trusted orthodontist for conventional orthodontic treatment.
  • Emergency Care: Dental pain can be intolerable. At Beyond Dental Care, we allocated emergency appointments each day to ensure that we can get your child out of pain as quickly as possible. Injuries caused in the playground or on the sporting field can also lead to dental emergencies. In the event that this happens to your child, please contact us immediately and we will ensure that they are looked after by one of our amazing dentists.
  • Special Needs Dentistry: At Beyond Dental Care, our dentists have the experience and ability to provide specialised care for children with a range of special needs. Please contact us to discuss your child’s requirements, and we will provide an appointment with the best dentist for their needs.

At Beyond Dental Care, we’d love to show your child how fun and pain-free a trip to the dentist can be.

We provide tailored and specialised care in line with your child’s needs, and through care and education, we can set them up with a healthy smile to carry them through life!

We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions about paediatric dentistry to help you navigate this journey. Take a moment to read through our FAQs, and feel free to reach out if you need any more information. Your child’s sparkling smile starts here!

When should my child first see a dentist?

We get asked this question often. The answer is as soon as they have some teeth erupt. It’s unlikely that we’ll need to treat them, however it gets them used to the dentist and can help build excitement for their next visit when the dentist may check and clean their teeth!

How often should my child visit the dentist?

Every six months. This way we can ensure that they’re teeth are kept clean and healthy, and any issues detected can be rectified early before they become painful and possibly traumatic.

What can I do to help my child prepare for their dental appointment?

Talk them through the process in a positive way. Explain that the dentist and dental assistant are kind and caring, and that they will make the experience fun! They get to sit in a big, reclining dental chair, and they can watch their favourite TV show on the TV on the roof. The dentist will have a look in their mouth, and they will be given a little present at the end of their appointment for doing such a great job!

What happens during a typical dental checkup for a child?

The dentist will meet your child and have a chat to put them at ease. They will get them comfortable in the dental chair and put on their favourite show on the TV on the ceiling. Depending on the age of your child, the dentist may just take a look in their mouth, they may clean their teeth, and they may take painless X-rays to see what is going on between your child’s teeth and under their gums. They’ll explain everything to you and your child in an easy-to-understand way, and will provide tips on brushing and flossing.

What are dental sealants and should my child get them?

Sometimes your child’s dentist will recommend fissure sealing one or more of your child’s teeth. Deep grooves, especially in molars, can be difficult to clean which can lead to trapped food and decay. Fissure sealant material is tooth coloured and is applied over the top of cleaned grooves to form a protective barrier over the grooves which prevents food getting trapped on chewing surfaces.

What should I do if my child has a dental emergency?

Try to remain calm and call us immediately. Our team will provide instructions on what to do and we will do our best to see your child as soon as possible.

How can I help my child develop good dental hygiene habits?

Bringing them to the dentist every six months! At home, you can use a timer to ensure that your child is brushing both top and bottom teeth for two minutes. Regular flossing is also important, and should be done prior to brushing to dislodge any trapped food, which will then be brushed away. Water flossers can be a great and fun way to get kids to floss.

Should my child use fluoride toothpaste?

We recommend that your child uses fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay, and will help protect your child’s teeth.

What are the signs of a dental problem in children?

Complaint of pain is not the only sign of a dental problem with your child. White spots forming on the teeth can be an early indication that the tooth enamel is starting to break down. Cavities can sometimes show as light brown patches, darkening as the cavity becomes more severe. Sensitivity to certain foods (hot, cold, sweet) can also indicate a dental problem, and you should schedule a trip to the dentist as soon as possible.

How can I help my child overcome their fear of the dentist?

Bring them to Beyond Dental Care! Explain the process and that the dentist and dental assistant are kind and friendly and that we will make the experience fun - and they’ll get a gift at the end. In all honesty, it is very difficult to change a child’s perception about the dentist being scary until they have an experience that changes their mind. That’s what we always aim to do, and we will never brush off or minimise the way they are feeling.

What are the different types of sedation dentistry available for children?

At Beyond Dental Care, we offer Nitrous Oxide (happy gas) sedation for children. The gas is inhaled through a scented nasal hood (and they can choose the scent) which helps them feel calm during the procedure.

When should my child start Invisalign treatment?

The dentist will usually consider Invisalign after your child’s baby teeth have all fallen out, generally around 12-13 years of age. Of course, Invisalign treatment can be started at any age, and may be suitable for anyone over this age.

How long does Invisalign treatment typically take?

Although it depends on the individual, most Invisalign cases take 12-18 months to complete.

What should I expect during my child's Invisalign treatment?

Depending on your child’s treatment plan, disposable aligners will be provided to be swapped out every one or two weeks. Each new aligner subtly changes tooth alignment to position your child’s teeth to the final desired outcome.

How can I help my child take care of their teeth during Invisalign treatment?

Ensure that they brush and floss regularly, and rinse their mouth after they eat or drink, before they put their aligners back in. Aligners fit snugly to the tooth, and will hold whatever is coating the teeth against the teeth. Oral hygiene is extremely important during Invisalign treatment.
