Dental cavities are permanently damaged areas on your teeth that develop into holes. A plaque build-up of bacteria, saliva, food, and drink causes the damage. Plaque starts forming as soon as you eat and drink, so brushing and flossing your teeth is essential.

A cavity may not start as painful, but without a filling, it will increase in size and can lead to significant pain, resulting in an emergency dental visit and sometimes tooth loss. This is why seeing your dentist for your six-monthly dental checkups is so important.

Cavity Filling Procedure

If a filling is required, your dentist will ensure the most pain-free experience possible using a local anaesthetic, nitrous oxide (happy gas), or a combination of the two. Any decayed tooth material will be removed, and the tooth cavity will be shaped for filling.

Mercury-free composite resin in the shade matching your tooth is inserted into the cavity. The resin is malleable and shapeable until a curing light is applied to harden it. When the resin is set, your dentist will shape and polish the tooth to comfortably fit your bite and ensure it closely resembles a natural tooth.
